Art House

From its inception, this was a house designed around art, conceived of as both a home and a gallery for the display of an extensive private collection of paintings, sculpture, and works in glass. Before we began building the house, architects Olson Kundig created virtual models to study and refine the placement of specific pieces throughout the house and grounds.

As builders, our charge was not only to construct a complex modern house to exacting standards but to install museum-level lighting technology and art display cases and components. Floating English sycamore ceiling panels that incorporate intricate lighting fixtures were machined with slotted connectors that allowed the panels to be locked into place.

Great precision was required to install sliding walls and partitions that allow for the transformation of interior spaces, opening up the kitchen for entertaining, for instance, or closing it down for privacy. One large wall panel that slides to close off the kitchen has a swinging door set within it.

The house is clad in steel siding panels and features green roofs, terraces with fountains and outdoor sculptures, and a pool with a cabana that echoes the main house.
