Schultz Miller worked with architect Nils Finne to transform this traditional, stucco house without diminishing the historical qualities that make it feel at home in its settled Seattle neighborhood. The project involved building a two-story addition, turning a dark attic into livable space with generous dormer windows, and infusing the interior with crafted details designed by the architect.

The addition, clad in patterned copper panels, adds a study on the ground level and extends the master suite above. New windows throughout, locally fabricated from fir, visually tie the original house to the addition and connect the whole house to its Northwest setting.4

The master bath features mirrors that float above the sinks and an intricate cedar ceiling. It was dubbed “Jim’s ceiling” for the Schultz Miller carpenter who dedicated himself to working out the geometry of the angled ribs and realizing the architect’s intent. The stair hall features laser-cut metal railings and a dramatic suspended light fixture, both designed by Finne.

Unseen but important, a geothermal heating system draws heat from the ground beneath the side yard to warm the house, and photovoltaic panels on the roof supply electricity.
