Maury Island House

Architect: OLSON SUNDBERG KUNDIG ALLEN

We worked closely with architects Rick Sundberg and Gladys Ly-Au Young on a house that opens to dramatic views of Mount Rainier while accommodating artwork and antiquities on an intimate scale.

A soaring roof supported by wood glulam beams orients the house toward the view to the south. Tall window walls bathe the house with natural light.

The floating quality of the roof is echoed in details like a fireplace hearth that hovers above the living room floor, and a mantel made of a single, uncut concrete slab that had to be forklifted into place and is supported by a hidden structural frame.

The juxtaposition of rooflines and clerestory windows creates a play of light and shadow that animate the front entry. The large front door pivots delicately, belying its substantial weight.

Inside and out, cedar and fir combine with decorative metals like bronze to give the home a warm, Pacific Northwest feel.
