The existing house was the right size for family living and entertaining, but it was dark and dated, with small windows that failed to take advantage of its waterfront location. We collaborated with McClellan | Tellone architects and interior designer Magdalena Kita to transform the house into the modern, open home our clients envisioned.
What was once a warren of small rooms connected by ordinary doorways is now a series of open, interconnected spaces, each space playing off the other, each defined not by solid walls but by the position of steel posts and beams, subtle changes in flooring material, shifts in ceiling height, and discrete focal points.
Step through the front pivot door and you have three compelling choices: Continue straight to the main living spaces and a view of the lake through a new window wall; turn to your left and head for a generous bar with a backlit onyx wall; or turn to your right and enter a kind of modern parlor, with casual seating and its own fireplace.
The interior has been opened up vertically as well as horizontally. A new floating staircase leads to a walkway overlooking the two-story entry area and updated bedrooms, including a primary suite with a freestanding tub that seems to float above the lake.

The waterfront deck has been improved by the addition of a glass cabana that covers a new outdoor kitchen, a dining table, and seating around a sleek fire bowl.
