The owners loved the location of the house they bought, with its commanding views west across Lake Washington to the Olympic Mountains, but the underwhelming interior prompted them to undertake a thorough upgrade.
The house had been built for the spec market by a non-local investment company whose goal seems to have been to build as large as possible for as little as possible. The result was a house that lacked quality and character.
We worked closely with interior designer Susan Marinello and her team to transform the look and feel of the interior without changing the overall footprint of the house or its floor plan. The exterior was upgraded in a subsequent phase.
The signature space in the house, the generous, barrel-vaulted living and dining room, originally had shallow false “beams” running the length of the barrel vault. We replaced these with trim that follows and accentuates the pleasing curve of the ceiling.
In the kitchen, we added floor-to-ceiling cabinets that hide a reconfigured pantry tucked in behind them. Pre-engineered wood flooring was custom-milled to be light in character, with few knots. The Calacatta Gold marble countertop continues past the windows to become an outdoor countertop for patio living.
In the primary suite, we transformed a warren of small bath and closet spaces into a shared dressing room and a large bath, with a wet space for a tub, shower, and steam shower separated by a glass partition wall. All surfaces were fashioned from 14 matching slabs of Calacatta Caldia marble for a flowing and consistent look. The dimensions of the custom-cut floor planks were determined by the dimensions of the room, so that the pattern uses only full planks.
The remodeled interior has a refined yet casual feel, something of the look of a beach house, but with solidity of an everyday home.
